Moraine Lake today

In season, yes, to shuttles and licensed buses, from first light to the last shuttle back at 7:30 pm. The road opens to them on 1 June 2026 and closes after 12 October 2026, and Parks Canada moves either date if the snow says so. Between those dates the only thing that shuts the road is weather, and when it does, Alberta 511 posts the closure and Parks Canada refunds the shuttle.

Alberta 511 lists no event on Moraine Lake Road right now. Road data refreshes every ten minutes.

Outside the season the road is trackset for cross-country skiing, November to May. The lake itself sits below avalanche paths and is not a casual winter walk.

Since 2023, Moraine Lake Road is closed to personal vehicles year-round. The lot at the lake holds a few hundred cars and was filling before five in the morning, the road has nowhere to queue, and Parks Canada had been turning cars around at the junction for years before it stopped letting them in at all. The ban is year-round and it is not being reviewed.

The exceptions are registered guests of Moraine Lake Lodge and holders of a government-issued accessible parking placard. Everyone else rides: the Parks Canada shuttle from the Park and Ride, the Lake Connector from the Lake Louise lakeshore, Roam Transit's Super Pass from Banff, a licensed commercial shuttle or tour, or a bicycle, which is the one way in that needs no reservation.

The readings below are from the Environment Canada station in the Lake Louise valley. Moraine Lake sits at 1,884 metres, about 153 metres higher, in a narrower valley with the Ten Peaks on its south side, so expect it a degree or two colder, shadier until mid-morning, and windier in the afternoon than the number here.

Snow at the lake is normal in June and again from mid-September. The canoe dock closes for it without notice, and the Larch Valley trail above the lake can hold snow into July. The weather page has the full seven days and the month-by-month averages.

There is no public Moraine Lake webcam. Parks Canada does not run one, Moraine Lake Lodge does not publish one, and every page we checked that promises a live Moraine Lake camera shows either the Alberta 511 highway camera at Lake Louise or a still photograph. If a real one appears we will add it here with its owner named.

The closest live picture is the Trans-Canada camera at the Lake Louise junction, which tells you the weather on the drive and whether it is snowing in the valley. It is on the webcams page, served live with its age shown.

The dock is run by the lodge and it is the only boat on the water: bringing your own canoe, kayak or paddleboard is prohibited since 2026 under the whirling disease rules; the lake is a water preservation zone. The lodge's own guests paddle free, which is part of why the dock queue moves slower than the one at Lake Louise. Arrive on an early shuttle and go straight to the dock, because the dock closes without notice in snow, rain or wind.

The Alpine Start shuttle leaves the Lake Louise lakeshore lot at 4:00 am and 5:00 am for people who want the sunrise on the Ten Peaks, and the sunrise page says whether that alarm is worth setting in your month.

Moraine Lake first. The light on the Ten Peaks is a morning light, the dock queue is shortest before ten, and the Larch Valley trailhead empties out by early afternoon when the Connector back to Lake Louise is still running every half hour until six. Lake Louise takes the afternoon well: the Chateau end is in sun, the boathouse is open until eight, and your car or the last shuttle down are both right there.

The Rockpile is the ten-minute walk up the boulder pile at the outlet to the view on the old twenty-dollar bill, and it is enough for most people. Consolation Lakes is a gentle three kilometres each way through the forest to a pair of tarns below Mount Babel. The real hike is Larch Valley and Sentinel Pass: 4.5 kilometres one way with 570 metres of climbing, gold in the last week of September, and often under a group-of-four bear rule in autumn.
