Moraine Lake: Every Way In Now That Cars Are Banned

Parks Canada closed Moraine Lake Road to personal vehicles year round. The road is narrow, the car park was small, and the queue of drivers waiting for a space was causing safety problems on the Trans-Canada. The ban is permanent, it is enforced at the junction, and there is no early-morning window.

The main route in. Book a seat, park free at the Lake Louise Park and Ride, and ride up. Your ticket also covers the Lake Connector between Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, which runs 7:00 am to 6:00 pm through 1 June to 12 October 2026.

Licensed operators are allowed up the road and do not need a Parks Canada reservation. They cost considerably more than the shuttle and many run a sunrise trip. This is the realistic answer when the Parks Canada seats have gone and you only have one morning.

Bicycles are allowed and it is free. The road climbs steadily for about twelve kilometres from the junction, so treat it as a proper ride rather than a shortcut. It is the only way in that needs no booking at all.

Roam Transit runs a public bus between Banff and Lake Louise in summer, on its own fare and timetable. It gets you to the Lake Louise area without a car, but it does not go up Moraine Lake Road. From the village you still need a Parks Canada shuttle seat, a commercial operator, or a bicycle.

There is no public transport of any kind to Moraine Lake outside the Parks Canada season. The road is shut to everyone.

The shuttle wins on cost and it includes the connector to Lake Louise, so one ticket covers both lakes. A commercial tour wins only when the Parks Canada seats have gone or when you need to be there before the first shuttle. Cycling wins if you would rather ride than book.

Moraine Lake Road and the shuttle to it run 1 June to 12 October 2026. Those dates move by a week or two each year with the snowpack, and Parks Canada confirms them in the spring.

Outside that window the road is gated and closed to everyone, including cyclists. In winter the valley is avalanche terrain, and reaching the lake on skis is a serious trip that needs training and equipment rather than enthusiasm.

Parks Canada runs an Alpine Start shuttle for exactly this. It leaves the Lake Louise lakeshore lot at 4:00 am and 5:00 am daily from 1 June to 12 October, at the regular shuttle fare, and you ride the Lake Connector back from 7:00 am. You park at the lakeshore, pay for parking, and show the receipt when you board.

The regular shuttle from the Park and Ride starts at 6:30 am, which in June and July is after sunrise. If the Alpine Start is sold out, a commercial sunrise tour or a bicycle are the remaining options that get you there in time.
