Parking lot status and when it fills

Expect it to be full

The lakeshore lot fills by sunrise and stays full through the day, and it costs $42. Use the Park and Ride and the shuttle instead.

Running, reservation required

Every seat is booked in advance. The remaining 60 percent of seats are released at 8 am Mountain Time two days before each date.

How the shuttle reservation works

Is Lake Louise frozen today?

Normally open water

The lake is normally open water and at its strongest colour, fed by glacial meltwater.

Where each number comes from

Everything on this page is pulled from a public feed every ten minutes and stored before it is shown, so a busy day here never puts load on the government services that provide it. Temperature, humidity, wind and snow depth come from the nearest reporting weather station to Lake Louise, which sits at almost the same elevation as the village. The forecast and any weather warnings come from the Banff forecast region. Road conditions, closures and the highway cameras come from 511 Alberta. Avalanche danger comes from Avalanche Canada and only appears during the season.

When a source stops answering, its panel says so instead of showing an empty box. When a reading is old, the age sits on the panel in plain sight. A camera that has served the same picture for a day is hidden and named, because a frozen picture of an empty highway is worse than no picture at all.

Common questions

Is there still snow at Lake Louise?

The snow depth reading on this page comes from the nearest reporting weather station and updates every hour. Snow can lie on the high trails well into July even when the village is clear.

Is Lake Louise open today?

The lake never closes. What opens and closes is the road to Moraine Lake, the lakeshore parking lot when it fills, the shuttle in its season, and the Trans-Canada when a storm or a crash shuts it. Every one of those is on this page, with the time it was last checked.

Is Lake Louise frozen right now?

The block above says what the lake normally does in this month: frozen hard from December to March, breaking up through April and May, open and turquoise from June to October, freezing over in November. Nobody measures the ice daily, so it is a calendar answer, not a reading. The skating page has the rink dates.

How often does this page update?

Every ten minutes. Each panel shows the age of its own data, so you can see at a glance whether a reading is current or whether that source has stopped reporting.

Where does this data come from?

Weather and forecasts come from Environment and Climate Change Canada. Road conditions, closures and highway cameras come from 511 Alberta. Avalanche danger comes from Avalanche Canada.
